The intermediate debating cup opened with a shock result as 8 Town eliminated 10 Country in the first debate on the motion ‘Prisons don’t work’.
The strong performance of Jack Rihoy and Giles Quigley just edged out the more experienced pairing of Oliver Yerby and Oliver Thompson. The younger pair’s argument that prisons were unable to present a sufficient percentage of rehabilitated criminals to claim that they ‘worked’ convinced the adjudicators. The defeated pair, considered early favourites for the title, have vowed to return stronger next term.
In the second debate, 10 South progressed in spite of a strong showing by 10 North in a discussion as to whether eating meat was ‘wrong’. Steve Scott and Merlin Veron produced a well-researched and compelling argument which questioned the need for meat eating in the modern world. However, in the end the performance of Fareed Anees and Ben Green won the adjudicators’ vote as they emphasised the medical benefits of meat consumption.
Callum Hockey (Year 7) won 3rd prize in the U18 category of the Guernsey Museum Photography competition. The theme of the competition was ‘Liberation’ commemoration the anniversary of the liberation of Guernsey. Callum received the price at a presentation event at Candie Gardens Museum. Well done, Callum! 20/05/2010

Twenty students from Year 9 represented Elizabeth College in the Guernsey Bailiwick Schools Challenge Cup run by the Army at Rue Mainguy. Each team of ten students had to undertake a range of tasks including building towers, transporting objects and constructing vehicles. Every task was designed to test teamwork, communication, problem solving and leadership.
Twelve teams took part from schools across the Bailiwick and Elizabeth College were placed second overall, narrowly beaten by a Year 10 team from Alderney. Thanks to Major Roche from the Army Careers service who organised the event.

Elizabeth College ‘V’ The Gurkhas

A Target Rifle Match versus the Gurkhas was held at Fort Le Marchant on Saturday 8th May. It was a privilege to welcome them to Guernsey (The Gurkhas had made me very welcome during my tour of Nepal in 1989).
It was a splendid morning at the range, quite breezy with light conditions improving throughout the morning. Peter Sirett and Mike Creber, two experienced coaches kindly offered to coach the Gurkhas: they did a fine job as the Army Target Rifle is unfamiliar to them.
Some of the up and coming shooters from Year 10 volunteered to man the targets and do the lookout duties under the direction of Rob Waters.
The result of the match was a win for College with a score of 286.6v to 264.1v. The top scorer in the match was Cpl Chandra.
Well done to all involved for making the morning such a success.

College Cadets enjoyed a successful weekend at the 50th Ten Tors Challenge and completed the 35miles and 45 miles without undue problems. Thank you to the reserves who were so helpful in supporting the operation.
Meanwhile, the Shooting Team competed against the Ghurkhas at Fort Le Marachant (and won) and a Guard of volunteers paraded at the Liberation Day celebrations. A rounded weekend, well done!

Basic Skills Target Rifle Course 2010
The Coaching Course was successfully completed recently following long classroom sessions and two blustery range days. In total there were 26 students, 23 from Elizabeth College and 3 Guernsey ACF Cadets. 20 seniors prepared and presented lectures and then provided the coaching and mentoring at the full-bore range at Fort Le Marchant.
The scores achieved are less important than the skills and knowledge acquired. However, there were Easter Egg prizes for the top scores. This year we were amazed by the top score achieved by Matthew Hudson 35.4 ex 35.7. Watch this space!
Well done to all 46 students involved with the course. 22/03/2010

CCF Ex Cairngorms Venturer (5) was a great success thanks to a) the superb winter mountaineering conditions in the Cairngorms - the best for 30 years, b) the hospitality of RAF Kinloss (what a sumptuous Officer's Mess!) c) the support from 20 (Guernsey's Own) Squadron who provided a practical insight into the workings of an active Nimrod Sqn and c) the commitment of the cadets to go that extra mile in grasping opportunities beyond the pier heads!
Particular highlights;
Nimrod flight simulator - a multi million pound 'bit of kit'
Nimrod sonar detection simulator - impressive technology indeed
UK National Air and Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre - we saw a real time EPIRB alert
Glenmore Lodge National Mountaineering Centre winter hazards lecture
Ascents of Cairngorm, the plateau and Castle Hill in superb winter anticyclone conditions.
Visit to RAF Lossiemouth (617 (Dam busters) Sqn - Tornado fast jets
'The Team Works'; 'Rise above the Rest'; 'Be the Best'. These are not merely mottos, they can be seen in action on the CCF exercises. 08/03/2010
The Debating Cup is off to a lively start with audiences of more than 50 pupils at both debates. In the first debate on the evils of technology, Country (led by George Melhuish, supported by Dan Gosselin) narrowly defeated Town (led by Josh Denoual, supported by Chris Georcelin).
