Debating Cup

The Debating Cup is off to a lively start with audiences of more than 50 pupils at both debates last week. In the first debate on the evils of technology, Country (led by George Melhuish, supported by Dan Gosselin) narrowly defeated Town (led by Josh Denoual, supported by Chris Georcelin). In Friday’s debate on private education, South (led by Hugo Meredith, supported by Sam Frank) saw off North (led by Tom Still, supported by Will Ozard).

There are two more debates this week: on Tuesday (‘Youth is wasted on the young’), and Thursday (‘Football doesn’t deserve to be the world’s most popular sport’).

Is Cosmology Science?

“Is Cosmology Science?

Presented by Tony Poulett.

Cosmos

At the Duke of Richmond Hotel on Wednesday the 24th of February 2010

Lecture starts at 8.30pm

Over the years the science of cosmology has progressed from the initial discovery, by Hubble, that the universe is expanding. Following on from this, there has been the discovery of black holes and, more recently, dark matter and dark energy. In order to examine whether cosmology can be considered as science, it is necessary to define both science and scientific theory. The subject, cosmology, will then be divided into its main constituents, namely: The Big Bang, Black Holes, Dark Matter and Dark Energy. Each subject will then be described to establish if they comply with these definitions.

A great opportunity for Year 11, 12 or 13 students who are interested in studying Physics.

Please see Mr Davis if you wish to attend this event.

CCF Ex December Dash (8)

27 cadets and 6 adult leaders spent the first five days of the Christmas holidays in delightful (some say daft!) Devon. The challenges of the December Dash are many, and open our eyes to what we can do when taken out of our comfort zone and to wild country activities. Few places so close to Guernsey are wilder than Okehampton Camp with -6 Celsius and a good covering of snow. At least the bogs around Cranmere Pool were frozen.
The objectives were to provide an opportunity for recruits and newcomers to put their training into practice in a realistic setting; to provide leadership training for Cadet NCOs; to give map and compass training; to provide Adventure Training activities including DofE Award expedition training (not camp craft) and to enable Staff training We were able to visit Commando Training Centre Royal Marines and to take part in
BTEC NVQ  Public Services module work, There was opportunity for early Ten Tors preparations / familiarisation and we were able to end the term with a bang rather than a fizzle!

Thank you to all students, staff and parents.

Yuletide Yomp

The CCF was very well represented at the Yuletide Yomp - 14 miles with full bergens to raise money for Help For Heroes, the charity that supports wounded Servicemen and Servicewomen.

Carrying 40kgs was former Senior Cadet Ryan Ashworth but the fittest person on parade was probably former Senior Cadet Matthew Webster - now in his Officer training at Commando Training Centre Royal Marine.  The strongest was probably former Senior Cadet (Army) Alex Knowleden - now 29 Commando Royal Artillery.  Also present were  the OCLt Col Aplin, Cdt Sgt Adrian Aplin, former Senior Cadet Glen Ashworth, Advocate Mark Halyard (OE, RAF Section), the Baliff Sir Geoffrey Rowland (OE and former Senior Cadet)  plus 15 other serving and retired personnel .  The amount raised was too much to be counted on the day but ran into thousands.

The OC has four remaining Help for Heroes wrist bands for sale: these were carried on the march and can be bought for a  minimum of £5.  See him for details.

Mr H's Learning Platform Quiz

You may be aware that the College has started to use something called a “Learning Platform” where teachers publish information, work and resources for students to access.  The Learning Platform is a web based system which means you can log into it from anywhere using web-browser software such as Internet Explorer, Safari, Firefox etc.

Over the next few months teachers will :

·         start to publish materials/activities/work for students to complete and possibly get you to submit your work online using something called “E-Learning Folio”

·         start to publish information/notices about their subject in “MyClasses”

·         start to publish school , year or careers information that will be useful to you and your parents

The address of the learning platform is www.elizabethcollege.sch.gg/mydesktop and you log in using your college number “SINA internet password” that you use to get to the internet in school.  There is also a link to the site on the College Portal home page called “MyDesktop VLE”.

To get you trying out the site I have created a little quiz called “Mr H’s Learning Platform Quiz”, which you can find on the  “myClasses” section.  Simply down load the quiz, complete the questions, save it and submit it back to me using the “submit” link.

IoD Debate: 'Directors of Tomorrow'

Congratulations to James Robson who has been chosen as one of the top 3 ‘bloggers’ for his report on the Institute of Directors debate. This means he has won a trip to London to attend a debate there in the presence of Lord Coe, among others.

Cadets visit HMS DARING

Daring

Elizabeth College CCF(RN) cadets were invited to join HMS DARING in Portsmouth for the overnight journey to Guernsey when she visited for the HMS CHARYBDIS and LIMBOURNE Memorial weekend.

The aim of the visit was to give the cadets an introduction to the Royal Navy’s latest £ billion destroyer and to experience life at sea. They were accompanied by S/Lt Tim Slann throughout their visit.

As part of the 2 day trip, the cadets also took the opportunity to visit Portsmouth’s Historic Dockyard which included a guided tour of Nelson’s Flagship, HMS VICTORY.

Once onboard DARING the cadets were split into 2 groups so that they could be involved in, and witness, a number of different activities. These included:

·         Departure from Portsmouth Harbour

·         A man overboard exercise where one of the ship’s RIBs [Rigid Inflatable Boats] was launched to recover ‘Fred’ the man overboard dummy.

·         Detailed guided tours of the ship.

·         Dressing in full fire-fighting suits complete with breathing apparatus.

·         Dressing in a sea survival suit and life jacket.

·         Every cadet was given the chance to steer the ship from the bridge under the guidance of the on-watch quartermaster and Officer of the Watch.

·         Chart work exercises with some of the young officers under training.

·         Witness anchoring in the Little Russel

·         Buying DARING souvenirs from the onboard NAAFI shop.

As a result of their visit, 3 out of the 5 cadets are now seriously considering a Royal Navy Career.
